Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
An intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure offered in our office that is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART). Sperm is injected through a small catheter through the cervix and into the top of the uterine cavity. This can either be done with your partner's sperm after it has been washed and prepped in our office, or with donor sperm that is sent to our office pre-washed.
During normal vaginal intercourse, less than 1% of sperm actually make it to the fallopian tube to meet the egg. With an IUI, sperm bypass several barriers by being inserted and directed straight into the fallopian tubes.
After the IUI, you will rest with your hips elevated for about 10 minutes and then you are free to resume normal activity. Two weeks after the IUI, you can take a pregnancy test to determine if you are pregnant.
